Campaign issues

My leadership will ensure a balanced approach to economic prosperity that maintains environmental sustainability, enhances community wellness and contributes to climate goals.

Position the NWT in the Emerging Clean Energy Economy

2019 is an interesting time for the NWT, given the reality of climate change in our backyards and ambitious climate commitments, both nationally and internationally. The NWT is rich with ‘responsible’ minerals and metals used in renewable (or ‘green’) energy infrastructure and NWT residents strongly support responsible mining. New research suggests that demand for these responsible minerals and metals could outstrip supply as early as 2022.

    • We have a real opportunity to position ourselves in the emerging clean energy economy as a reliable source of responsible materials derived using responsible practices.

Continue Advancing other Economic Diversification Strategies

The NWT has plenty of other promising pathways to economic diversification, including:

  • Knowledge economy (digital economy) (research economy), such as cold weather testing
  •  Tourism, including smaller scale eco-tourism and enhanced promotional strategies
  • Commercial fisheries
  • Agricultural sector
  • Mineral development
  • Lobbying the Federal government for a stronger Military presence

Invest in Social, Communications and Transportation Infrastructure

Recent results from the Centre for the Study of Living Standards confirmed that, on average, the NWT is far behind most other Canadian jurisdictions in terms of adequate social, communications and transportation infrastructure. As your MLA, I would aggressively seek partnerships to close the gaps and take advantage of opportunities by advancing:

  • Economic corridors, such as the Slave Geological Province corridor and the Mackenzie Valley Highway
  • A deep water port in Tuktoyaktuk
  • Settling the outstanding land claims in the Territory
  • Hydro potential, including expanding the Taltson power station and grid
  • Clean energy options in diesel/off-grid communities
  • Tourism infrastructure, such as a new Visitor’s Centre in Yellowknife
  • Sound procurement, training and employment practices that benefit local communities and Northerners

Enhance Community Health and Wellness

There are ample opportunities to improve social conditions and protect community health and wellness throughout the NWT, which I am keen to pursue, including:

  • Establishing the NWT polytechnic university
  • Creating a Children’s Advocate position within the GNWT
  • Ensuring adequate housing in all NWT communities
  • Supporting immigration of skilled workers
  • Ensuring education of and access to affordable nutritious food in all communities
  • Fully staffing the new Stanton Territorial Hospital
